So on the topic of home workouts, I’m going to give you my best and most effective tips for working out from home and staying consistent with it as someone who has been doing home workouts for more than 6 years now. I do want to mention here though that I did start out as a self-confessed gym junkie for probably a good 10 years before falling pregnant however after having my first child, I started an online home workout program purely because it was easier to exercise whenever I had a few spare minutes and I’ve never looked back …
Working out from home is hard. It’s definitely the harder option in my opinion but use these tips and I have no doubt that you’ll grow to love and actually prefer home workouts just as I have done. Home workouts are a mental game, they’re a real mind over matter battle. You almost have to flick a switch to be able to get into the frame of mind needed to bust out a solid workout. These are the little things I have done and continue to do which help me flick that switch -
First and foremost, it’s important to know what you’re doing before you workout - to have a game plan! If you’re a regular gym goer, then you’ll know that it’s easy to bounce from one piece of equipment to the next and before you know it, you’ve been there for over an hour. If you’re a FEEL BE LOOK member, this won’t apply to you as I design and create your workouts for you however if you’re not a member and you wake up ready to exercise with no real plan of attack, you’ll likely fumble around for a few mins and quickly become unmotivated and call it quits. Stop this from happening by knowing what you’re going to do before you even start.
My next piece of advice would be to get dressed in your activewear for your workout only. Lately I’ve seen more and more people on Instagram upload videos of themselves working out from home in their pj’s. I’m totally guilty of this too and whilst this is completely fine, it doesn’t make working out from home an easier or a more enjoyable process. I find that it actually makes getting into a motivated mindset more difficult which really affects the quality of my workout. Not to mention, you tend to spend most of the workout, fiddling with your drawstring or pulling out a wedgie because pjs weren’t designed for exercise. Come to think of it, I often go to sleep in my activewear to eliminate this problem altogether.
If you can do this next one, it makes a HUGE difference and that is to have a permanent area set up where you can workout. This will look different for everyone depending on what type of exercise you like to do from home but I’d suggest having a mat already rolled out and ready to go as the bare minimum and from here you can add a pair of dumbbells or some resistance bands if you wish. Simon (my husband) does triathlons and a few years ago we invested in a mag-trainer for him which is like a stationary bike so he can train from home. If that mag trainer isn’t set up and ready for him to jump on whenever he feels motivated to exercise, he’ll come up with a thousands excuses why he can’t train.
My next tip is to play music. Music is so good at boosting your endorphins almost instantly and it just has a knack of getting you pumped up and excited to move. I use a portable speaker which works really well for me because that’s all I’ve ever really known but if you’re used to going to the gym and working out with headphones, then stick with this. It will feel more familiar for you which will help you stay consistent.
This is a bit controversial but hear me out - I’m going to suggest you workout any time in the morning but definitely before lunch time so you don’t fall into the relaxation trap. Your home is typically a place for you to unwind and relax, you don’t tend to associate it with somewhere you would go to get sweaty or burn through a few hundred calories. I’ve found over the years that working out in the late afternoon/ early evening time slot is notoriously hard, especially at home because this is when our body (thanks to our circadian rhythm) wants to unwind and relax. There isn’t a flock of people, commercial lighting or a loud sound system to get you pumped up at night like there is at a gym so consider switching to morning workouts.
Finally, try and limit distractions where possible. It is easy to get distracted at home which is another reason I suggest working out in the mornings - preferably before kids wake or you start work for the day. At home, you’ve got a million and one things to distract you - the washing machine going off, dogs barking, kids screaming, a courier delivering a parcel. Limit as many distractions as possible so you can stay focused on your workout because once a distraction occurs, it’s difficult to gain that motivation again.
So they are my top tips for working out from home and being able to stay consistent with it. Of course, to guarantee your success, my advice would be to come & join FEEL BE LOOK because instead of forcing yourself to work out, you’ll actually want to work out. To convince you even more, I’m also giving my beautiful podcast family the opportunity to experience the first month with us for just $4.95. To take advantage of this, simply use the code PODCASTBEAUTY on checkout. I’ll leave the link to subscribe in the show notes.
