5 Ways To Style T-Shirts In Autumn/ Winter

Those of us living in warm climates will be very familiar with the shorts + tee combo that subconsciously becomes somewhat of a uniform when the weather reaches 25+ degrees. As we head into cooler temps though, I can’t help but feel that the humble t-shirt often takes a back seat during Autumn/ Winter, given its short sleeves and light-weight structure. In this article, I share 5 ways to wear your favourite t-shirt year round, which not only increases the cost per wear, but creates layered and inspiring outfits too …

Trench Coats

Now, hear me out - this isn’t exactly ground-breaking however what I love most is the softness that a t-shirt adds to an otherwise stiff, structured trench coat. It’s the perfect blend of masculine vs feminine. All of these examples (above) show a tucked t-shirt but you could just as easily play with different proportions too by wearing a tee untucked with a trench coat as well.

Blazers

Just as a t-shirt adds softness to a trench coat, a t-shirt adds a casual look & feel to a blazer. These two pieces balance each other perfectly, given the blazer adds structure & polish to an outfit. The most appealing outfits are often those that include a little bit of contrast and aren’t too matchy matchy - eg. not all casual, not all floaty, not all structured.

Sweaters

It’s easy to throw on a sweater and run out the door however layering a t-shirt underneath a sweater gives an outfit something extra. Not only does it look effortlessly stylish but it’s somewhat unexpected, more considered & therefore looks more interesting. The key to pulling this one off is all in the t-shirt fit - a slightly oversized tee looks great peeking out underneath a sweater, whilst a fitted tee looks great worn with v-neck sweaters.

Cardigans

A decade ago, most wouldn’t be seen wearing a cardigan outside of the house but in 2024, cardigans are cool, stylish and a great way to show your t-shirt (unlike a sweater that covers most of the tee). This also creates a great opportunity to experiment with colour & texture. A simple jeans + tee combo looks instantly more stylish by introducing a cardigan. Wear buttoned, unbuttoned or leave a few buttons undone for a simple, elegant look. Feel dowdy wearing a cardigan? Just add some statement accessories.

Shirts

This is one of my go-to looks as it works so well with either a denim, cotton, linen on silk shirt. To suggest shape, I prefer a fitted tee under a shirt however as per the 2 images on the left (above), a semi-fitted tee looks fab too. Just something to keep in mind - rarely will you see this look with a tee fully untucked, however as with all things in fashion, act confident & no one will question you! Layering with a shirt is a great way to combat trans seasonal weather - when it’s cold, yet there’s still some warmth in the air too.

Vests

Similar to cardigans, vests can be worn in many different ways depending your preferred style - it’s layering without adding too much bulk or volume and therefore, losing your shape. It’s also unexpected, wreaks of confidence and takes an outfit from 90 to 100. Whilst all examples (above) show a crew neck tee, I feel this look would work equally as well with a v-neck t-shirt too.
